The story
Restavracija Jožef serves country cooking at Vojkova ulica 9A in Idrija, and Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand in 2026. It is the restaurant of Hotel Jožef, and its menu stays close to the recipes of the town.
The kitchen is a certified maker of Idrija žlikrofi, a protected traditional speciality. Each dumpling is shaped by hand, one at a time, and served with bacalao or a truffle sauce. Smukavc, a stew of dark outer cabbage or kale leaves, comes as a soup. Gault&Millau scored the restaurant 13 in 2026 and singled out how this once humble dish takes a more refined form here.
The duck fillet is cooked sous vide and finished with a fig and balsamic sauce and slices of Gorenjska prata. Rabbit fillet is rolled around carrot and Krnica smoked cheese, a modern take on the old pairing of rabbit with žlikrofi. The chef's plate wraps pork tenderloin in pancetta, sets it on vegetables and adds more žlikrofi.
The hotel stands on the site of a former mine smelting plant, and its architecture drew on the Čermak-Špirek furnace. Jožef's board of local cold cuts and cheeses is named after the town's many Jožefs. The traditional Idrija lunch ends with tarragon štruklji, served with strawberry purée and vanilla sauce, after smukavc and žlikrofi.
