The story
The Royal Hotel brings a relaxed approach to New Zealand pub dining in Naseby, Central Otago. Built in October 1863, the timber structure faced immediate challenges when a violent storm destroyed it two years later. A subsequent rebuild established the low single storey facade and rusticated weatherboards that survive today. Recent renovations preserved those original double hung sash windows while completely updating the public bar and kitchen layout.
The kitchen highlights regional pub fare through straightforward preparation and locally sourced produce. Lamb shank sits atop kumara and carrot mash alongside a braised red wine reduction, matching the Cuisine Good Food Guide recognition for the area’s standout meat dish. Smaller plates feature firecracker cauliflower bites with devil hot sauce and baby back pork ribs marinated in a sticky Coca Cola glaze. Every evening concludes with house baked desserts like flourless chocolate cake or apple and rhubarb crumble.
Winter service directs guests toward the central hearth, while warmer months utilize the outdoor deck beneath the clear Central Otago sky. Guests typically pair their meal with draft Emerson beers or pour from the curated whiskey library. The layout keeps the banqueting space separate from the main bar, allowing groups to gather without disrupting regular patrons. Simple wooden tables and exposed brickwork ground the current pub menu in the building’s original goldfields character.
