The story
De Havixhorst in Meppel is a fine dining restaurant at Schiphorsterweg 34-36, on a château estate in the far south of Drenthe. Gault&Millau awarded it 12.5 points for 2026, and its kitchen draws on classic preparations.
The chef selects local produce with care. Vegetables and fruit come from the estate's own garden, and dairy arrives directly from a farm in Nijeveen. Game is sourced from the Reestdal, and some of the meat comes from a herd of Scottish Highland cattle raised by a neighbour. The cooking style is adventurous, with classical roots in the produce of the land.
Tables are laid with care and lit by candles, in a setting that feels centuries old. The main building dates from 1753 and sits among baroque gardens and a sculpture park. The lunch menu is simpler than dinner but uses the same local flavours. The restaurant also holds the We're Smart Green Guide's 2 Radishes for 2026.
