The story
Café Samabe, at Korte Veerstraat 1 in Haarlem, serves Balinese and Indonesian cooking and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, the guide's mark for good quality, good value cooking.
Chefs Jiani Gritzalis and Hozan Kassem lead the brigade. Gritzalis cooks alongside owner Richold Bakker, whose Indonesian restaurant in Bergen has earned seven Bib Gourmands. The Haarlem branch has now received its second. Charcoal-grilled satay is a specialty here. Saté Samabe pairs Rica (spicy) with Guling (mild), both Balinese chicken.
The rijsttafel is the easiest way to cover the menu. Lekker500 describes a spread of butter-tender rendang simmered in coconut milk, Balinese chicken thigh, urap-urap, sayur lodeh, gado-gado and sambal goreng telor, with nasi kuning and fresh fruit. Spring rolls with duck and prawns arrive with a homemade chili sauce. Among the à la carte plates, Udang Peteh brings large prawns in a petehbonen sauce. Ayam Betawi is breaded chicken thigh in sweet-spicy kecap sauce.
Samabe opened in 2019 in "De Zon", a shop building from 1899 put up by Vroom & Dreesman, whose names still show on the facade. High ceilings and original details set the tone inside. Lekker500, which placed the restaurant in its Top 500 for 2026, adds a black-and-white stone floor, plenty of woodwork and tropical plants. When the weather allows, the terrace looks onto the city centre.
