The story
Le Vieux Jean is a classic French restaurant at Heilige Geestkerkhof 3 in Delft, on the town's oldest square at the foot of the leaning Oude Kerk tower. The Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026 recognises good quality, good value cooking, which suits a menu built around French classics.
Owner-chef Robert Jan Polman has run the kitchen since 2006, working alongside his partner Désiré, who leads the room. His parents traveled to France in the 1970s to source ingredients that were hard to find in the Netherlands, and the wine list still leans heavily on France. House specialties include duck liver terrine and veal sweetbreads with lobster sauce. Guests can order à la carte or choose a multi-course tasting menu.
The dining room is small and historic, with wood paneling, exposed ceiling beams, a natural stone floor and Delft blue tiles. Tables are dressed in linen with silver cutlery. Gault&Millau awarded 15.5 for 2026, describing the atmosphere as warm and intimate. Larger groups can book the Opkamer, the Wijnkamer or the Franse Kamer.
