The story
Huisje James serves modern cuisine at Van Golsteinlaan 20 in Ugchelen, Apeldoorn, from a thatched-roof house at the edge of the Veluwe. Gault&Millau rated it 15 in 2026. The kitchen is led by chef Laurens Samsen.
Samsen cooks in a modern style with French technique underneath, and Lekker500 (which placed the restaurant in its 2026 Top 500) names sauces as his strength. Game and local produce from the Veluwe feature, along with vegetables from the restaurant's own garden. Dinner is a six-course menu at €99 or a seven-course menu at €109. On Thursday and Sunday you can also eat à la carte.
The current menu opens with hamachi, kombucha, tarragon and jasmine. Dry-aged loin arrives with red curry and chicory, a nod to Asian cooking within a Dutch, seasonal frame. Dessert is cherry with white chocolate, rose and raspberry. The vegetarian menu is a full version of its own, with smoked-garlic celeriac and morel with wild garlic.
Huisje James sits behind a Van der Valk hotel, and the dining room has a dim, 1970s mood. Lunch runs Friday to Sunday, in the garden when the weather allows. In the converted barn, the Chef's Table seats 14 around the chef's workbench. Five courses with matching wines cost €155 per person.
