The story
Café de Klepel at Prinsenstraat 22 in Amsterdam is a wine café with a French bistro kitchen, rated 14 in the Gault&Millau guide for 2026. It sits in the Jordaan, in a former brown café.
The chefs cook with fresh seasonal produce and change the menu every day, offering three courses (€54.50) or four (€64.50), each including cheese or dessert. Recent reviews describe mackerel on red pepper cream with wild garlic oil and purslane, and grilled green asparagus with egg yolk, laver, anchovies and peas. Orange chicken on lentils with a porcini foam has appeared as a main course. Small grignoter plates are served at the bar for those who only want a snack.
The list is entirely French, with more than 300 bottles in stock and around 25 wines poured by the glass each evening. Sommelier Niek Beute is singled out in several reviews for his stories behind each pour. Lekker500 has placed the café in its Top 500 every year from 2019 to 2026.
The wooden floor creaks, the staff greet you cheerfully, and from the bar you can see the whole place. Tables are close together and the house is busy most nights. Regulars and visitors share the room, and the mood is informal.
