The story
Rue de la Plume is a modern International restaurant at Veerstraat 22 in Alkmaar, listed as Michelin Recommended for 2026. The kitchen leans toward French technique with a contemporary edge, and the menu changes with the season.
Luella Molenaar cooks in the open kitchen and runs the restaurant with maître-sommelier Madelene van Zoelen. Molenaar gained experience in Dutch kitchens, then cooked in her spare time with Margot Janse in South Africa and with Richard Ekkebus at Amber in Hong Kong. Her cooking is light and precise, with a French base and a modern twist.
The meal is a surprise menu of three to six courses, and the dishes follow a clear arc. Sea bass ceviche comes with anise brioche, which one critic praised for its soft, rich bread. Salmon is gently cooked and served with fregola, hollandaise, hazelnuts and green asparagus. Braised beef arrives with cinnamon root and polenta, and dessert is pineapple panna cotta with lychee ice cream. Gault&Millau awarded the restaurant 12.5 points for 2026.
The room is calm, with generously spaced tables, a modern fireplace and a seating area for aperitifs. Madelene chooses a wine for each course, served at €10 per glass, and the pairings are a large part of the evening. Cheese comes under a glass cloche, with a name card for each cheese.
