The story
VELROSIER is a Chinese restaurant at 2F, Good Nature Station, 318-6 Inaricho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, and it holds one Michelin star (2026) for high quality cooking. The restaurant offers a modern Chinese menu built around seasonal ingredients and a distinctive approach to flavor.
Owner-chef Yuji Iwasaki trained for ten years at a hotel Chinese restaurant before opening VELROSIER in 2014 in Ashiya's Kurakuen district. His method, which he calls "adding on," combines key ingredients to create new flavors. Each component's texture and distinction is tested through repeated trial and error until the parts harmonize.
VELROSIER relocated to Kyoto in 2019. The kitchen presents Chinese cuisine with a Japanese respect for ingredients, reinterpreting traditional dishes in new combinations. Plating is delicate, and the team uses up-to-date cooking equipment alongside its traditional techniques. Gault&Millau awarded the restaurant 15.5 in 2026.
