The story
Kodaiji Wakuden is a Japanese restaurant at 512 Washiocho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, and it earned two Michelin stars for 2026 for its excellent cooking. The kitchen works in the kaiseki tradition, with counter seating and courses shaped by the season.
A course announced in January 2026 follows the early spring thaw. Buds push through the cold, and snowmelt starts to run into streams. Verses from the Man'yoshu and the Kojiki guide each dish, which arrives one plate at a time.
In November the kitchen serves kopp crab, the Kyoto name for female snow crab. Its appeal is the roe: the inner roe brings a deep savoriness, while the outer roe pops with a light texture. The season is short, running from early November through December.
