The story
I Portici is a contemporary restaurant at Via dell'Indipendenza 69 in Bologna, inside the I Portici Hotel. It holds one Michelin star in the 2026 Italy guide, and its kitchen is built on a short list of fresh, seasonal ingredients.
Nicola Annunziata, born in Sarno near Salerno, has run the kitchen since January 2023. He earned his first star at Vistamare in Latina at 25, and he later led the kitchen at Pietramare in Calabria. His stated approach is light, refined cooking with few ingredients, chosen for freshness and respect for the season. The restaurant also holds three radishes in the We're Smart Green Guide for 2026.
Pastry chef Vincenzo Digifico joined in February 2024 and works closely with Annunziata on the restaurant's desserts. His plates rely on seasonal fruit in several textures, with little sugar and a deliberate balance of sweet, bitter, salty and sour notes. Pasticceria Eden, which opened in September 2025, carries his sweet and savoury creations through the day. He describes his approach as working "a mano libera," free of strict geometry in plating.
The hotel's main rooms are decorated with about 1,500 square metres of Liberty-style frescoes, restored after careful work. Elegant Italian and international design, soft lighting and the hotel's service set the tone for dinner. Contemporary cooking in this setting feels formal without being stiff.
