The story
Csopaki Resti, a Modern Cuisine restaurant at Kossuth utca 1 in Csopak, Hungary, earned a 14.5 from Gault&Millau in 2026. It occupies an old railway buffet beside Csopak station, so the train is one way to reach the table.
Bence Karácsony cooks at an open kitchen that guests can watch closely from the bar. The six-course tasting menu is prepared in advance, and only the final touches happen during the meal. Outside the front of the restaurant, meats, catfish and flatbreads go onto a live grill, and fresh pasta is hand-stretched in view of the diners.
The restaurant is a spin-off of Laurel in Budapest, which has since closed, and it keeps that restaurant's memory alive on the shores of Lake Balaton. With only ten seats, the room feels warm, intimate and relaxed. Karácsony runs the kitchen with one other team member, who mainly handles service. Gault&Millau notes that solo diners often leave with a few new acquaintances.
