The story
Szaletly sits at Stefánia utca 93 in Budapest's Zugló district, where it has built a reputation for modern Hungarian cooking. Gault&Millau scored it 14.5 in 2026. The building has housed a restaurant since 1907, and the current owners have kept that history while moving the kitchen in a new direction.
Head chef Dániel Bernát has developed a recognisable style in a few years. His cooking shows a fondness for Asian flavours and draws on Hungarian classics from the late 20th century. Some of these come back as playful, double-layered dishes, such as the Stefánia Meatloaf, named after the street where the restaurant stands.
The poppy seed bread pudding is a standout, baked with advocaat, drizzled with raspberry honey and topped with white poppy seed foam. The à la carte menu also lists Hungarian goulash in Burgundy style with sliced dumplings, and venison stroganoff with steamed dumplings and sour cream. The chef's offer features a Gesztelyi Mangalica meatloaf with creamed spinach. The wine list holds close to 100 bottles across many regions and grape varieties.
The interior balances nostalgia with modern clean lines and retro accents. Live music changes from night to night, from traditional Gypsy bands to blues-jazz groups. Guests can eat indoors or on the garden terrace, and the restaurant is listed by Michelin as Recommended for 2026.
