The story
Gundel étterem, at Gundel Károly út 4., 1146 Budapest, is a Hungarian restaurant that earned 12.5 from Gault&Millau in 2026. The restaurant has been part of Budapest's dining life for 130 years and sits at the edge of the City Park, where its Hungarian kitchen still draws on the recipes of its founder, Károly Gundel.
Corporate chef András Wolf leads the kitchen, which the restaurant describes as built on more than 140 original Gundel recipes. The 2021 relaunch reimagined a curated set of iconic dishes under the National 11 banner, with the originals kept in view. The guide's reviewer felt the kitchen had finally found the right direction, and hoped Hungarian diners would take the restaurant back as their own. Gundel also placed 46th on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list in 2002.
The paprika chicken with spätzle stands out for its silky, glossy sauce. For dessert, the Gundel pancake comes with a dense chocolate sauce, and the Hungarian trifle is layered with vanilla, walnut and cocoa sponge. The daytime menu is shorter, while dinner is offered as two, three or four courses. Sunday lunch is served as well.
The dining halls were renovated to feel lighter while keeping their early-20th-century elegance. A traditional band plays among the tables. In fine weather, the garden under old trees lets guests eat within earshot of the City Park and Budapest Zoo. A private room and a wine cellar are also part of the venue.
