The story
Kartoffelrestaurant Kiste serves home cooking centered on the potato at Fahrstr. 13-14 in Trier, and the Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 1 Kochlöffel in 2026. The restaurant sits in the city's pedestrian zone and is run by Familie Betz.
Potatoes arrive as soup, fried, or baked, and the kitchen treats them as the main subject. The menu lists house-baked potato bread, potato soups with different garnishes, Bratkartoffeln, baked potatoes, Reibekuchen and oven-baked casseroles. Potato salad is made in-house, and it also comes alongside steaks, schnitzel and fish.
Local dishes sit next to the potato classics. Trier spit roast beef, stuffed Trier potato dumplings and Alt-Trierer Hacksteak are on the list, along with schnitzel variations and a few international dishes. Kappes Teerdich, which the restaurant calls the Trier national dish, gets its own mention. The Schlemmer Atlas notes that schnitzel, steaks and fried eggs play the supporting role here.
Inside, 220 seats are spread across several rooms. From spring to autumn the terrace adds 120 more. The kitchen serves daily from 11:30 to 21:00, and there are separate drinks and ice cream menus, the latter a summer card.
