The story
derWaldfrieden is a family-run hotel restaurant at Dorfstraße 8 in Herrenschwand, in the Schönau im Schwarzwald area, serving Badische cooking at 1,020 metres. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand for 2026, its mark for good quality at fair value.
Volker Hupfer says he grew up in the kitchen, and his menu stays close to home. The Schlemmer Atlas gave the restaurant 2,5 Kochlöffel in 2026 and singles out his fine regional dishes and the homemade Black Forest cake. Game comes from the surrounding forests, where four hunting grounds border the village. The kitchen cooks on induction only, and vegetarian and vegan dishes are part of the offer.
More than 85 percent of the wine list comes from Baden or Württemberg. The house holds the "Haus der Baden-Württemberger Weine" certification for it. Suppliers are chosen by region first, a habit that fits the farm-to-table approach of a restaurant that began as a village inn with a small farm.
The dining room is bright and finished entirely in natural fir. A tiled stove stands inside, and the windows face the landscape. The Hupfer family has run the house since 1954, now in its third generation, and there is outdoor seating for warmer days.
