The story
Gehrlein's Hardtwald sits at Sandhohl 14 in Neupotz, where its country cooking earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, a mark for good-quality, good-value cooking. The restaurant is listed under country cooking and French cuisine, and the menu rests on regional produce prepared with care.
Martin Gehrlein took over the business from his father in 2005. After his apprenticeship he worked in other kitchens and watched respected chefs at work, and that experience shapes his style. He builds dishes around seasonal ingredients and clear, product-focused cooking, with regional produce at the centre.
Ludwig Gehrlein, a trained brewmaster, founded the restaurant in 1970 with his wife Mathilde. Over five decades the dining rooms have served fine, traditional homestyle meals, and the Schlemmer Atlas awards it 2,5 Kochlöffel for 2026. The family has since added a guesthouse and a country café, and since 2020 the café has operated from the Alte Mühle in Rheinzabern.
