The story
Landhotel Donner, at Zur Alten Schmiede 4 in Meschede, serves country cooking with a regional German focus, and the Michelin Recommended listing for 2026 places it among the region's notable tables. The restaurant sits inside a village hotel in Remblinghausen in the Sauerland, a short drive from the Hennesee.
The menu changes through the year, built around what the region produces. Asparagus arrives in spring, chanterelles and Matjes in summer, and game, duck and porcini in autumn. In November and December the kitchen roasts goose in the oven. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded the restaurant 2 Kochlöffel for 2026, noting asparagus, game and porcini dishes, also available as a four-course menu.
Starters include marinated Feldsalat with radicchio and sweet-and-sour Beluga lentils, and smoked salmon served with a horseradish dip. Main courses range from braised venison leg in liquorice jus to a rump steak under an herb crust with red wine sauce. Duck breast is roasted pink and finished with honey and balsamico jus. For dessert, Viennese Topfenknödel come with plum compote and vanilla ice cream.
The dining room is warm, with honey-coloured wood and carefully chosen fabrics. In summer, guests take house-baked cake on the garden terrace. The wine list holds about 55 bottles, with a focus on Germany, Italy, Spain, France and overseas regions. The room also hosts family celebrations and business events.
