The story
Bistro Margarete, on Scheffelstraße 55 in Karlsruhe, is a seasonal German bistro that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand (2026) for good quality, good value cooking.
The card changes with the seasons, and the kitchen adjusts dishes at short notice, so treat any menu as a snapshot. Lunch is served as three courses, while evenings bring several four-course menus. Guests with allergies or intolerances can ask for an alternative, and vegan dishes need to be requested in advance.
The starters lean on regional produce: beef tartare from Allgäu cattle with quail egg, wild garlic cream and wild herb salad, and cured trout with potato fritters, honey mustard sauce and trout roe. Mains are hearty. Cordon bleu of country pork comes with Allgäu mountain cheese, juniper ham and pommes frites, and braised ox cheek sits on potato and nut butter purée with Spätburgunder jus. The dessert list includes a quark cream with rhubarb sorbet and a dark chocolate mousse with wild blueberries.
The Schlemmer Atlas awards the bistro two Kochlöffel (2026) and describes it as cozy, with bar seating and an intimate courtyard. Outdoor seating is available, and dogs are welcome when they are announced at the time of booking. A private room suits larger groups, and from 15 guests the kitchen serves at least three courses, with a set four-course menu from 20 people.
