The story
Gasthaus Spieker at Detmolder Straße 86 in Hövelhof cooks Westphalian food with a Mediterranean streak, and the Michelin Guide listed it as recommended in 2026. The restaurant sits in the Riege district and is run by the siblings Beate and Franz Spieker.
Franz Spieker trained and travelled in Chicago and Mallorca before returning to Westphalia. His kitchen sets Mediterranean lightness against regional solidity, and the house describes the idea as basil meeting parsley. The country cooking here keeps one eye on the local larder and the other on what lies beyond it.
Salmon trout from Hövelrieger waters appears as a tartare on potato rösti and again as a crisp-skinned fillet with horseradish sauce. Classic beef roulade comes on creamed savoy cabbage. Saddle of Senne venison is served with port sauce and poppy-seed Schupfnudeln. Homemade maultaschen are filled with spinach and goat's cheese. Dessert might be sweet napkin dumplings with vanilla ice cream and blueberry sauce. Schlemmer Atlas awarded two Kochlöffel in 2026.
The Spiekers are the third generation to run the house, and they have restored and furnished it with care. Guests can choose the modern dining room with its wine bar and winter garden, the snug Blumenzimmer or the summer terrace. A banquet hall and hotel rooms are on site, and private celebrations are held by arrangement.
