The story
Christians Restaurant, at Neckarstraße 40 in Neckargemünd near Heidelberg, runs a contemporary, Mediterranean-leaning kitchen and earned 3 Kochlöffel from the Schlemmer Atlas in 2026.
Chef Christian Heß describes the cooking as classics reinterpreted, with seasonal dishes drawing on varied influences. On the carte, veal medallion and cheek arrive with truffle, savoy cabbage and a potato Baumkuchen. Quail is paired with duck liver in brick pastry and Madeira. Lamb saddle and shoulder bring ras el hanout, aubergine and date couscous. Sea bass and a starter of octopus and prawn carpaccio with avocado cover the lighter side.
The dining room occupies the former Knappenkeller, whose foundations reach back to the 13th century. It sat unused for 13 years before the restaurant opened here on 1 March 2016. Today the rooms are bright and furnished in country-house style, right by the Neckar. In summer a partly covered lower terrace seats about 50, and the beer garden serves sausage salad and flammkuchen.
On Saturday evenings and public holidays, the Menu Carrousel lets guests choose at least two courses from four. A four- or five-course gourmet menu is always available. The Michelin Guide lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026.
