The story
Oben sits at Am Kohlhof 5 in Heidelberg, where Robert Rädel runs a German kitchen that earned one Michelin star for 2026. The restaurant sits in the forest above the city, and its seasonal German cooking follows the same regional logic throughout the year.
Robert Rädel leads the kitchen and has cooked in Heidelberg since 2004, at Oben since 2013. Loris de Luigi works alongside him as sous chef. The menu uses selected local ingredients and leaves out prime goods such as saltwater fish and tropical fruit, a choice Der Feinschmecker (3) highlights in its review.
The meal is a 13-course miniature menu, and guests should book well ahead. Early courses have included beet with cumin caramel and raw-marinated Altrhein zander served with knotgrass and fermented red cabbage. The menu builds toward the Landschweinwedel, a pork tail served with tart Boskop apple and chive-mustard.
Stone walls, wooden furniture and rocking chairs give the dining room a relaxed character, with service to match. In summer, tables move into the garden, where the surrounding greenery makes the setting feel removed from the city. Sommelier Leis Büttner focuses the wine list on regional bottles from the nearby wine-growing areas.
