The story
Matsumi serves Japanese cooking at Colonnaden 96 in Hamburg, and Der Feinschmecker gave it a 2.5 rating in its 2026 guide. The restaurant has been open since 1982, and its kitchen works from traditional recipes.
More than twenty kinds of sushi and sashimi are on offer, and the fillets are cut only after you order. Whole fish comes from the Hamburg fish market, while tuna and hamachi arrive fresh by air. The izakaya side of the menu covers tempura, karaage and teriyaki, and sukiyaki or shabu-shabu can be cooked at your table.
Vintage wooden fittings and paper-covered windows give the room a calm, zen-like feel. Traditional partitions offer some privacy, and in summer tables stand on the pedestrian street outside. The sake selection is large and the wine list small, and Japanese beer is poured as well. A vegan menu is also available, as the Schlemmer Atlas notes in its 2026 entry.
