The story
Restaurant Karner holds one Michelin star (2026) for its seasonal Bavarian and Austrian cooking, served at Nußbaumstraße 6 in Frasdorf. The restaurant sits inside a country inn that is more than 500 years old.
Head chef Hannes Fussel cooks in an open-minded, refined style and builds each course around regional produce. Guests choose between four and six courses of a single menu. Der Feinschmecker gave the kitchen 2.5 points in 2026 and called the setting elegant and rustic.
Venison tartare with apricot kernels and freshly foraged barberries is the course critics single out, velvety with sharp accents. Beef heart is marinated in kimchi and then grilled, which brings out a pure meaty flavor. A sweet pepper broth follows with a slow, lingering heat.
The historic dining room has pistachio-green armchairs, and the service is busy but jovial. The wine list runs to about 140 labels, with a focus on Austria, mostly classic styles and a few mature Bordeaux. A full renovation is scheduled for 2026. The same kitchen team also runs the Westerndorfer Stube, the inn's second restaurant, which serves traditional Bavarian food.
