The story
Pierburg - Erika Bergheim, at Schmachtenbergstraße 184 in Essen, runs a Mediterranean-leaning kitchen that the Schlemmer Atlas honored with 3 Kochlöffel in 2026. The restaurant occupies a historic Gasthaus and serves International and Mediterranean dishes under chef Erika Bergheim.
Erika Bergheim cooks in two modes at once. The bistro-style card carries comforting plates such as braised pig cheeks and a rustic onion steak with chanterelles. The tasting menus, each of four or five courses, move toward gourmet work, and courses can also be ordered individually.
Her own account describes natural, seasonal cooking where the product stays central. Classic dishes are built on careful technique.
The bistro card has included Iberico pork neck with pickled white cabbage, apricot and yoghurt, and Skrei with sauerkraut beurre blanc and mashed potato. Dessert has run to a crème brûlée with mango and passion fruit sorbet. The vegan tasting menu lists parsnip with hazelnut and sea buckthorn, and the Selection E.B. menu offers black tiger prawns with radish and pineapple.
The room seats around 80 guests and combines chic contemporary design with a historic wooden ceiling from 1901, as Der Feinschmecker noted. The wine list focuses on Germany and France, with rare Bordeaux vintages going back to 1985. Service is described as warm and attentive.
