The story
Chefs & Butchers at Im Löwental 64 in Essen runs a World Cuisine kitchen that Der Feinschmecker rated 2.5 in 2026. The restaurant grew out of a friendship between cook Michael Scheil and the owners of the well-known Essen butcher shop Bremen, and that origin still shows in the cooking.
The Wiener Schnitzel has stayed on the menu, though the kitchen has grown more ambitious over time. Turbot comes with red beet and Amalfi lemon, veal tongue sits alongside it, and black-feathered chicken is served with romanesco and truffle. Guests can choose the classic five-course menu, a vegetarian five-course menu, or order à la carte.
The dining room is an elegant loft with restrained industrial design, open all year. In warm weather the outdoor terrace, with its lounge seating, becomes the place to sit. Schlemmer Atlas notes creative dishes such as kale macarons alongside the classics, and reviewers mention the friendly service.
