The story
Wirtschaft von Johann Gerner sits at Dannberg 3 in Heßdorf, just outside Erlangen, and serves Franconian country cooking with a few French touches. The house received a 2026 Michelin Recommended distinction, and the family has run it for generations.
Detlef Gerner, great-grandson of the founder, leads the house today. The kitchen works with local game such as roe deer and wild duck, along with veal and seasonal asparagus. Vegetables come through the Nuremberg wholesale market, where the team buys from growers in the region. Occasionally a product from farther away earns a place on the menu for its flavor.
The dining room has the feel of a country house set among the ponds and fields near Erlangen. The Schlemmer Atlas awards it two Kochlöffel and notes that the four-course menu is handwritten on a sheet of paper. A separate room, the Ofenstübla, hosts small gatherings, company dinners and celebrations, and outdoor seating is available in good weather. Guests can also book the "Häusla," a self-contained cottage with one double and two single rooms, which is rented exclusively.
