The story
Weinrestaurant Bacchus in Donauwörth, at Weingartenstraße 2, 86687 Kaisheim, is a German wine restaurant whose kitchen cooks Landhausküche, rustic country cooking with a refined touch. The 2026 SchlemmerAtlas awarded it 2 Kochlöffel for a weekly rotating four-course menu with wine pairing and a few down-to-earth dishes.
Irmgard Schmidt, known to guests as Irmi, runs the kitchen. Her dishes are traditional recipes from Swabia and Bavaria, along with regional specialities from elsewhere in Europe. The house uses local products wherever possible, and the menu changes every week.
Jürgen Schmidt selects roughly 170 red and white wines, rosés, sparkling wines and Champagne, stored in a walk-in cellar. Every bottle comes from the classic European wine regions, and the team knows most of the producers personally. The schnapps come almost entirely from winemakers and small distilleries.
The building dates to around 1752, according to the cast-iron plate in its central stove, and was renovated without destroying the old fabric. Interior designer Marion Felch used lime plaster and solid wood for the modern, rustic-elegant dining room. It seats 26, with simple wooden tables and a stove that keeps the room warm.
