The story
Nobelhart & Schmutzig is a German restaurant at Friedrichstraße 218 in Berlin, where a seasonal kitchen built on regional farms earned one Michelin star in 2026. The kitchen opened in February 2015 with a focus on the producers behind each ingredient, and that focus still shapes the menu.
Head chef Micha Schäfer cooks under the motto "brutally local," using only ingredients from the surrounding region. The kitchen leaves out pepper, lemon and olive oil, relying instead on fermented and preserved preparations. Guests choose a six or eight course menu, and a vegetarian version is available. The restaurant has also placed 43rd on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list in 2024.
One course pairs potato, apple and onion, balancing earthiness, sweetness and acidity. The duck with plums has roasted notes, fruit and umami. The meal ends with crème caramel served with figs.
A long counter runs around the open kitchen and seats up to 28 guests, while a large table in the back seats 15. Nothing separates the dining room from the kitchen, so guests watch the cooks at work. Photos and videos are not allowed inside, and children are welcome.
The list holds about 1,000 selections, with a focus on nature-friendly wines, and the restaurant offers expert wine pairings. Brita-filtered water, still or sparkling, comes with every menu.
