The story
Brauerei-Gaststätte Klosterbräu, at Obere Mühlbrücke 1-3 in Bamberg, serves Bavarian and Franconian food in the city's oldest brewery, established in 1533. The Schlemmer Atlas gave it 1 Kochlöffel in 2026.
The old Brauereigaststätte seats 60 and has been carefully restored. Brewery certificates and family photographs cover the walls, antlers hang in the front section, and a tiled stove stands among rustic wooden tables. The Braun-Bierstübla (40 seats) has wood-panelled walls and a dark plank floor. Portraits of the Braun family, who ran the brewery from 1851 to 2017, hang beside a craftsman's letter from 1783.
Guests enter through the Schwemme, where beer is still poured straight from a window. You can drink it standing under cover or outside. The stepped terrace on the Obere Mühlbrücke looks across neighbouring facades to the spire of St. Stephan. From May to September, the 124-seat Regnitz beer garden sits on the river bank facing the old mill quarter, a fitting place for a Franconian meal.
