The story

Sweet Pea, Saint-Jean-de-Luz: Breakfast, Lunch and Pastry in Ciboure

Sweet Pea is a patisserie and breakfast spot at 23 Quai Maurice Ravel in Ciboure, near Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Le Fooding listed it in 2026 for turning an old laundromat into a restaurant with a bakery-style menu that runs from morning to afternoon.

A chef with Basque coast experience

Lucy Shaw, a New Zealand-born chef, previously cooked at Cucina Byblos in Saint-Tropez and Providence in Guéthary. Breakfast includes scones, boiled eggs, bacon buns and granola with yogurt. At midday, the grilled cheese uses Ossau-Iraty with butternut squash and a red onion jam spiced with cloves, cinnamon and star anise, served on bread from a nearby bakery.

Cakes and pastries through the day

The baba au rhum is topped with crème diplomate and soaked in citrus syrup. Banana bread, cookies and beetroot-ginger cake are available all day. Whole cakes, including a rum and vanilla Basque cheesecake and a carrot cake with pecans, can be ordered for celebrations.

Doing your laundry doesn’t feel like such a chore at this old laundromat in Ciboure, which was transformed into a restaurant with just the right amount of fabric softener by the Neo Zealand born chef Lucy Shaw – who used to work at Cucina Byblos in Saint-Trop’ and Providence in Guéthary. Choose your setting: at breakfast, a quick wash cycle with scones, boiled eggs, bacon buns and granola with yogurt and fresh fruit; or, when noon strikes, opt for bright colors, like the delightful Ossau-Iraty grilled cheese sandwich filled with butternut squash and spiced red onion jam (cloves, cinnamon, star anise) made on bread from a nearby bakery. Not fully convinced yet? The lovely baba au rhum topped with crème diplomate, bathed in a citrus syrup should get the job done – unless you’d prefer some banana bread, a cookie or beetroot-ginger cake, among other sweet treats available all day long. In short, you’ll love washing your dirty laundry in public at this place. // Gérard Roubeix
