The story

Pod Zidom Bistro, Zagreb: Michelin-Recommended Bistro Beside Dolac Market

Pod Zidom Bistro, at Pod zidom 5 in Zagreb, is a market-led bistro that Gault&Millau scored 13 in 2026. It sits a few steps from the main square, right beside Dolac.

Cooking from the market next door

The kitchen buys its produce daily at Dolac and works with small local producers, so the menu shifts with the season. Wild herbs from the market stalls appear on the glazed aubergine with white bean hummus and kefir. The Michelin Guide has recommended the bistro since 2019, and it holds that listing again in 2026.

Dishes worth ordering

Slow-cooked lamb comes with parmesan gnocchi and parmesan mousse. Beef cheeks arrive with cream-filled dumplings and chicken skin cracklings. The beef tartare is served with smoked bone marrow and kimchi. Guests also single out the sourdough with cracklings butter and wild onion kajmak, and a dessert that reworks schneenokle with baked egg whites and crisp biscuits. It is bistronomy with a Croatian accent, and priced accordingly.

Wine and terrace

Wine drives much of the identity here. The list covers Croatian and regional winemakers, gives natural wines particular attention, and includes a house Pod Zidom brut and pet-nat by the glass. In warmer weather the open terrace looks onto Zagreb Cathedral, while the interior stays simple and relaxed.

Bistro Pod Zidom is located on the street of the same name in Zagreb, in the very centre of the city, right next to Dolac, the main market. So they always offer several dishes made from seasonal ingredients. We were greeted kindly despite the lack of a reservation, but they managed to seat us at the only available table. On weekends, the restaurant is usually full, so it is better to book a table in advance. The personnel were very pleasant and professional, ready to answer to the questions in English for our foreign friends. The simple interior design also contributes to making you feel relaxed, and there is also an outdoor terrace with a green fence for warmer days. The way the menu is written is a bit confusing because everything is listed together, from drinks to seasonal dishes and other dishes, and then again wines, first by the glass, and then bottled. We started with champagne, and before the dishes arrived, they served us fresh sourdough bread with butter made of cracklings and wild onion kajmak. Then we had the chestnut and mushroom cream soup, which we would definitely recommend, the apple and kohlrabi salad, the agnolotti pasta, like small ravioli, with pear and hazelnuts. The slow-cooked lamb with parmesan gnocchi and parmesan mousse, and the tender beef cheeks with dumplings filled with kajmak were especially delicious. The combination of innovation and tradition was also visible in the dessert: a version of schneenokle (ile flottante) with baked egg whites and crispy biscuits. Pod Zidom is a good example of bistronomy in which the execution, presentation and quality of the dishes are at a higher level, and therefore the price is higher than usual.
