The story
Le Bistro is a French bistro at 1 Ulica Antuna Mihanovića in Zagreb, attached to the Esplanade Hotel and scored 15.5 by Gault&Millau in 2026. The Michelin Guide also lists it as Recommended for the same year.
Ana Grgić Tomić, named Chef of the Year by Gault&Millau Croatia in 2022, runs this kitchen and that of Zinfandel's, the hotel's other restaurant. In 2012 she became the first woman to lead the Esplanade kitchen. Her à la carte menu changes often, guided by the line "the season is always the best guide." When the first wild asparagus arrives, it goes into soup and risotto, and alongside sea bass fillet.
Winter menus have brought smoked prawns with quince and chili jam, porcini croquettes with sunflower seed pesto, and baked cod in a fine herb crust. Other plates never leave. The štrukli are baked cottage cheese pastry finished with cream, and the hotel says it has made them for nearly a century. The Wiener schnitzel and a French-style steak tartare with fries keep regulars returning.
The art deco dining room is glassed in and sunlit, and a green terrace sits outside. The wine list covers Croatian cellars along with bottles from Slovenia, Italy and France. Most are poured by the glass.
