The story
De Mijlpaal is a French restaurant at Sint-Truiderstraat 25 in Tongeren, Belgium, and holds one Michelin star (2026). Chef Jan Menten and his wife An Penxten run the restaurant together, serving French cooking in the centre of the city.
Chef Jan Menten and An Penxten stand behind both the kitchen and the service. Gault&Millau (2026) gives the restaurant 16 points and praises its classic cuisine and attentive service. The two first met while working in the kitchen of a caterer, and the restaurant grew out of that partnership.
The dining room occupies the former bakery of Jan Menten's parents in the heart of Tongeren. A thorough renovation turned it into a modern, stylized space. The name refers to a Roman milestone from around 200 AD, found in 1817 during excavation work in the city centre. The stone lists routes toward the Rhine frontier and the Champagne region.
