The story
LiJo is a French kitchen in the centre of Maldegem, Belgium, at Noordstraat 14, and Gault&Millau awarded it 14 points in 2026. The restaurant serves seasonal French fine dining in a relaxed setting, with a menu that changes with the produce.
Jochen Provoost and Lien Van Basselaere run LiJo together. Before returning to Maldegem, Jochen cooked at star level for years, and both worked on mid-sized private yachts. The restaurant is their own project, and the menu reflects that history in its precision and restraint.
The à la carte includes grilled langoustine with beurre maître d'hôtel and a langoustine tartare with sinaasappel, and a tomato dish built on coeur de boeuf with Parmesan, olives and Coppa di Parma. Mains include Mechelen chicken with girolles and pomme de terre écrasée, and cod with chorizo and a white wine sauce. Desserts include crème brûlée and a chocolate mousse with a hazelnut and coffee crumble, plus a selection of farm cheeses. A three-course menu costs 65 EUR and a four-course menu 83 EUR, drinks not included.
LiJo occupies a renovated townhouse behind the Sint-Barbarakerk. The dining room is calm and unhurried, and the staff pay close attention to detail without fuss.
