The story
De Poorterij at Langstraat 10 in Maaseik is a garden-led restaurant where chef Rudi Peters cooks around vegetables, herbs and flowers. Gault&Millau scored it 14.5 in 2026.
Peters builds on a classical gastronomic base with a contemporary green outlook. Vegetables carry the story, joined by carefully chosen produce from land and sea. The We're Smart Green Guide gave the restaurant 5 Radishes in 2026.
The summer menu comes in two versions, one of land and sea and one entirely green. Both open with carrot tartare, gazpacho and pickles. On the sea route, monkfish arrives with green olive and shiso. The green route offers roasted aubergine with girolles and aged balsamic. Both end with a Dame Blanche. Dishes follow the daily harvest, so the menu changes.
Patricia, host and sommelier, matches wines to each course and season. She also makes alcohol-free infusions from the garden's herbs, flowers and aromatics. The kitchen presents them as a full pairing in their own right.
The house dates from 1875 and has served as a school, a grocery and a village café. Its arched gate still greets guests. On sunny days the terrace looks over herb beds and flower borders.
