The story
Mariette, at Weggevoerdenstraat 152 in Leuven, serves French-Belgian cooking on a classical base, and Gault&Millau gave it 12.5 points for 2026. Guests can follow a set menu or build their own table à la carte.
Chef Koen Lienard leads the kitchen with his team, and Gault&Millau describes a classic repertoire with a modern touch. The restaurant is a family business. Father and son-in-law work the stove, while mother and daughter look after the dining room. The name comes from grandmother Mariette, who still pops in, peels shrimp and chats with guests.
The kitchen pays close attention to scallops and turbot. Wild pheasant is roasted until juicy and served with lightly caramelised chicory, hand-rolled croquettes and a fine champagne sauce. Menus for groups of five or more, and five-course evenings on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays, follow the same seasonal approach. Dessert might be raspberry with sabayon frappé, white chocolate and meringue.
The dining room has a sleek, understated look. On warm days, aperitifs are served on the garden terrace, while lunch and dinner always take place indoors. Air conditioning keeps the room comfortable, and the restaurant is fully wheelchair accessible. Vegan meals are not offered, and fully lactose-free menus cannot be guaranteed, so guests with dietary needs should mention them when booking.
