The story
El Gato Gordo is a Mexican restaurant at Lange Koepoortstraat 51 in Antwerp, and Le Fooding listed it in 2026. The room is small and colorful, with lanterns, pennants and vintage furniture, and the menu follows a Mexican kitchen built around tacos, nachos and cocktails.
Chef David Michiels is self-taught, and the tortillas are made in-house. The taco trio comes with shredded beef, pulled pork or chicken, and vegetarians can choose jackfruit or mushroom. Each taco is finished with guacamole, chili sauce, sour cream, lime and onions prepared two ways, marinated and raw.
On Sunday afternoons the menu adds brunch dishes such as huevos rancheros. In the evening, the kitchen serves a black bean dip and a bowl of homemade nachos, which pair well with a Margarita.
