The story

Onyx Restaurant Vienna: Asian Cuisine Opposite St. Stephen's Cathedral

Onyx Restaurant in Vienna serves upscale Asian cuisine from its sixth floor at Stephansplatz 12 (Haas-Haus), across from St. Stephen's Cathedral. Gault&Millau gave the restaurant 11 points in 2026.

Cross-cultural plates from the kitchen

The menu moves between cuisines. Fine nigiri and light tuna tartare typically open the meal. Crispy prawns come with a yuzu-truffle marinade, and the Gambas Rojas salad combines Mediterranean prawns with fennel, basil and lardo. Fish is flown in fresh, from cod to turbot, and the poached sea bass en papillote is the reviewer's favorite. The Thai section includes a Tom Kha Gai where coconut tempers the chili heat. Meat dishes feature Styrian organic chicken, Uruguayan beef and a few Viennese classics.

The view and the service

The dining room's main draw is the view of St. Stephen's Cathedral. The same review found the ingredients first-class but the seasoning heavy, and suggested using less salt. Service was less consistent: one appetizer was overlooked and reached the table after the main course had already arrived.

Opposite St. Stephen's Cathedral, cross-cultural diversity reigns. A multicultural menu features time-tested, exciting dishes with plenty of flair. Examples? Crispy Prawns, or baked shrimp, with a yuzu-truffle marinade. Or Gambas Rojas, the Mediterranean prawn salad, with fennel, basil, and lardo. Freshly flown-in fish – from cod to turbot. Our favorite: the poached sea bass “en papillote,” cooked in parchment paper. When it comes to meat, the big names also dominate. Styrian organic chicken, beef from Uruguay, a few classics of Viennese cuisine, and several nods to Thai cooking. Among the dishes in this last category, the elegantly spicy Tom Kha Gai stands out most, where coconut perfectly tempers the heat.
