The story
Restaurant 1617, at Hütten 2 in Leogang, serves Austrian cuisine in the Bauernstube of the Forsthofgut hotel. Gault&Millau awarded it 13.5 points for 2026, and the restaurant is listed as Michelin Recommended for the same year.
The menu follows the classics of Austrian cooking, built from regional ingredients and adjusted to the season. Venison saddle, Arctic char baked in salt, Salzburg Nockerln and beef tartare all appear on the à la carte card. Gault&Millau singled out an Arctic char starter with pickled radish, cucumber oil, dill, caviar and a grain crisp. Its lamb trio with ossobuco, beuschel and loin, by contrast, was judged to need stronger side dishes.
Beef tartare and fondues are prepared at the table, and the kitchen carves and fillets meat beside the guest in the old manner. Winter brings fondue evenings with a Chinoise broth, a cheese version, or chocolate with fruit. Fondue is booked in advance for two or more guests. Reviewers also praised the service as consistently strong and the wine list as broad and deep.
The room is rustic, with porcelain and silverware that recall a grandmother's kitchen. Folk music accompanies the evening. The meal closes with apricot strudel in puff pastry and apricot ice cream. The restaurant also hosts private dining for family celebrations, dinners for two, and gatherings of friends.
