The story
Hearth is a modern British restaurant and bakery at 10.5 King Street in Kingston upon Hull, rated Good by The Good Food Guide in 2026. The first-floor dining room is run by head chef and owner Ryan Telford, and the ground-floor bakery bakes bread and pastries Thursday to Sunday.
Ryan Telford has cooked in Michelin-level kitchens, including Chez Bruce in London and Henne in Denmark. His interest in cooking over fire shapes the menu, which uses local and seasonal ingredients cooked on a custom-made hearth. Small plates arrive before larger ones, and a mixed grill for two is cooked over open flame.
Roasted bone marrow comes with sourdough and a parsley and shallot salad, while Szechuan honey-fried chicken is served with roasted sesame seeds and smacked cucumber. BBQ salmon with dashi and pickled apple and grilled pork pluma with fennel and chanterelles show the kitchen's range. Sunday roasts include fish and vegetarian options, followed by sticky toffee pudding with bourbon toffee sauce.
Guests can begin at the bar with a cocktail or bar snacks before going upstairs. The bakery supplies fresh bread and desserts to the restaurant, and its brunch menu offers a more relaxed pace on the ground floor. Head baker and co-owner Caitlin Ogden trained in classical French cooking and previously worked as a pastry chef in London kitchens. The wine list includes tangy whites and savoury reds by the glass.
