The story
Porter & Rye is a steakhouse at 1131 Argyle Street in Finnieston, Glasgow, where the menu is built around Scotch beef. The Good Food Guide lists it as Good for 2026, and it also holds an AA Rosette for 2026. The kitchen has worked with local suppliers since the restaurant opened in 2014, and the beef is the reason most guests come.
The restaurant holds accreditation from the Scotch Beef Club, and its chefs source cuts from a network of local businesses. A meat-ageing cabinet sits in the room, and a blackboard lists the premium cuts on the day. Larger sharing steaks, including tomahawk, chateaubriand and porterhouse, are priced by weight and age.
Carpaccio arrives moistened with truffled goat's milk and finished with shredded pecorino. Veal sweetbreads sit on walnuts and red pepper pesto, an unusual pairing that the Good Food Guide found works. Beef-dripping fries are a standout side. For many regulars, the Sunday roast is the highlight, with thick-cut meat, braised ox cheek, roasted vegetables and a bone-marrow jus.
The dining room occupies a converted commercial space in a traditional Glasgow tenement. Mezzanines add seating, and glass and low lighting keep the room feeling cosy. Stools at the bar and counter suit solo diners and a lighter grazing menu. The wine list is short and steak-friendly, with most bottles available by the glass. Dessert might include a sticky toffee Alaska, its meringue dome hiding a ginger ice.
