The story
terre à terre is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant at 71 East Street in Brighton, and it holds one AA Rosette for culinary excellence (2026). Amanda Powley and Philip Taylor have run the kitchen since 1993, when the restaurant was still a 30-seat room in Pool Valley.
Friends and classically trained chefs, Powley and Taylor moved the restaurant to a larger site on East Street near the beach. The cooking sets out to challenge the usual idea of meat-free food. The restaurant describes its plates as visually striking, and says they often win over diners who arrive doubtful about vegetarian cooking. Nearly three decades on, the kitchen still works from that same brief.
The Sunday menu, Terre à Partager, is served for the whole table. It takes the parts of a Sunday roast, including Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese, and reworks them without meat. Guests choose two courses at £35 or three at £45 per person. Afternoon tea runs as a three-tier stand with an umami twist, where miso, soy and sesame sit alongside classic sweet and savoury treats.
The wine list is organic and biodynamic, with a section of wines from Sussex estates. Cocktails are handcrafted, and a separate non-alcoholic list called Spirited Away covers drinks without spirits. The restaurant also holds a Three Radishes rating from the We're Smart Green Guide (2026).
