The story
Gaststube Zum Klosterbräu, at Kirchplatz 1 in Neuburg an der Donau, serves Bavarian cooking built on regional produce. The Michelin Guide listed it as Recommended in 2026.
Otto Böhm cooks authentic Bavarian dishes in a kitchen that guests can watch from the dining room. The choice is between three menus: traditional, vegetarian, or a five-course gourmet menu. From Tuesday to Friday there is also a shorter set lunch, which draws on produce from garden, field and forest.
Braised milk lamb shoulder arrives in a cast-iron pot, and farmhouse duck comes crisp from the oven. Larger cuts are carved at the table: duck or goose from the Bachbauernhof, veal shank, and Altmühl Valley lamb shoulder. Vegetarians can order fresh ravioli or stuffed zucchini blossoms with seasonal vegetables.
The Böhm family has run the house for ten generations. Its historic guest rooms date from 1565 and keep their wood-paneled ceilings and tiled stoves, which helped earn 2.5 Kochlöffel from the Schlemmer Atlas in 2026. The building is a former Benedictine convent, and between 2 and 6 pm cake and apple strudel are served in the old malt barn or, in fine weather, in the cloister garden.
