The story
Lohninger is an Austrian restaurant at Schweizer Straße 1 in Frankfurt am Main, where Mario Lohninger's kitchen earned a rating of 3 in Der Feinschmecker for 2026. The restaurant sits on the ground floor of a historic townhouse near the Museumsufer, and its menu pairs Austrian classics with Asian, Mediterranean and American touches.
Mario Lohninger grew up helping in his grandfather's bakery and his parents' restaurant in Leogang, near Zell am See. He trained in international kitchens before opening Lohninger in spring 2010. He keeps the Austrian classics but lightens them, and the menu is split into "Die Heimat" and "Die Welt" so guests can build a meal from both halves.
Der Feinschmecker calls the Wiener Schnitzel and oxtail goulash the best in town. Carinthian Schlutzkrapfen appear on the menu as well. From the international side, the yellowfin tuna sashimi with shiso cucumber salad and the New York-style pastrami sandwich show the restaurant's wider reach.
The dining room has high, individually decorated ceilings, a grey and lilac colour scheme and bespoke wooden furniture. Austria forms the core of the wine list, and staff offer knowledgeable guidance on bottles from the country.
