The story
Erno's Bistro, at Liebigstraße 15 in Frankfurt am Main, is a French bistro that holds one star in the 2026 Michelin Guide. The restaurant has operated for more than 50 years in the Westend, a 20-minute walk from the city centre, and its classic French kitchen remains the reason guests return.
Valéry Mathis has led the kitchen since 1995, and his cooking follows French haute cuisine with detours into southern France. The menu stays close to classic technique. Der Feinschmecker credits him with translating French tradition into precise flavour, and the kitchen's fixed dishes show that approach at work.
Beef tartare arrives with potato rösti, crème fraîche and caviar. A souffléed organic egg rests on leek fondue with Périgord truffle and sabayon. The entrecôte comes with mustard and vinegar jus, spinach and a potato mille-feuille. For two, the Bresse chicken is served in two courses, with the breast dressed in truffle and the leg served in consommé with pearl barley.
The restaurant sits on a quiet side street between the Old Opera and the Palm Garden, and Schlemmer Atlas awards it 3.5 Kochlöffel for its checkered tablecloths and cosy bistro feel. The interior has stayed largely unchanged since Eric Huber took over, and he welcomes guests with an easy warmth. The wine list offers around 700 selections, with French bottles and a dessert wine section that includes older vintages.
