The story
Bistro Villa Merton at Am Leonhardsbrunn 12 in Frankfurt am Main holds one Michelin Star (2026) for its French-inspired cooking. The restaurant occupies a protected villa from 1927 in the city's diplomatic district.
Owner André Großfeld, born in 1977 in Telgte, trained under Alfons Schubeck and later cooked at Tantris in Munich under Hans Haas. He has run the villa's restaurant since January 2015 and earned a Michelin star there the same year. His credo is to focus on the product and keep the fuss to a minimum. Head chef Philippe Giar works alongside him.
From Tuesday to Saturday, the gourmet card offers two modern seven-course menus, one of them vegetarian. Monday brings a gourmet special. Those after something simpler can choose the bistro card, with a weekly business menu and a few German classics on weekdays. Coq au vin with ratatouille and potato gratin is a house favorite. So are the glazed veal sweetbreads with mushrooms, spinach and velouté.
The villa was built for the industrialist Richard Merton, and the dining rooms now carry some colorful decor. A summer terrace is open in season. The champagne list is the cellar's strongest suit, backed by German and international wines. Guided by this kitchen, the Schlemmer Atlas awarded 3.5 Kochlöffel (2026). From Tuesday to Saturday, two to six guests can sit at the Chef's Table inside the kitchen for a six-course menu.
