The story
1789 Restaurant, at 1226 36th Street NW in Washington, DC, is an American restaurant in historic Georgetown that holds a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026. The kitchen serves elevated American dinners, with French and Asian influences on the menu.
Executive Chef Charles Kreiser leads the kitchen, and the menu changes with the seasons. The restaurant also holds a 3.5 Kochlöffel rating from Schlemmer Atlas for 2026. Pastry Chef Stephen Cordell oversees the desserts, which include a lemon-lavender tart and a spiced carrot cake.
The foie gras torchon comes with apricot mostarda and a port-balsamic reduction. Hokkaido scallops arrive with miso-carrot purée and bacon lardon. Lobster fettuccine nero is finished in a brandy-cream sauce. The Linz heritage filet mignon is topped with seared foie gras and served with bordelaise.
The dining room sits in a Federal-style townhouse built in the early 1800s, and the restaurant takes its name from 1789, the year the U.S. Constitution was adopted. Antique furnishings, a wood-burning fireplace, and colonial-era artwork fill the rooms. The wine list includes sherry, Old and New World bottles, and cocktails such as the Private Barrel Old Fashioned.
