The story
Gary Danko is a French kitchen at 800 North Point Street in San Francisco, and it earned a Michelin Recommended listing in 2026. The restaurant sits in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, where its menus combine classic French technique with American produce.
Chef Gary Danko grew up watching his mother cook in upstate New York, and he later studied under Madeleine Kamman, who taught him the techniques and history of French cooking. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of Hyde Park in 1977. His early posts included the Tucker Hill Inn in Vermont and kitchens in the Bay Area, among them Beringer Vineyards and The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco.
The current menu depends on seasonal, locally grown and raised ingredients. Flavors from other culinary traditions appear alongside the French base, and the sauces and seasonings stay balanced.
The dining room is warm and enclosed, with orchids and colorful artwork around the tables. Service is personal without being casual. The restaurant also holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award from 2001, and its wine list is one of the reasons guests linger.
A private dining room seats 5 to 10 guests for celebrations, business dinners, or small gatherings with a dedicated team on hand for the evening.
