The story
Birdsong, at 1085 Mission Street in San Francisco, is a Pacific Northwestern restaurant that earned two Michelin stars in 2026 for excellent cooking. Chef-owner Christopher Bleidorn runs a contemporary American kitchen built on whole ingredients and the rhythms of the season.
Bleidorn opened Birdsong in 2018 after cooking at Benu, Atelier Crenn and Saison in San Francisco, and at Alinea in Chicago. His cooking draws on his upbringing in Hingham, Massachusetts, and on the whole-animal, whole-vegetable approach he describes as central to the restaurant. Produce is seasonal, and the kitchen sources from growers it says respect the ecosystems they work within.
Discovery is the shorter option, available Tuesday through Thursday for early weeknight dinners and pre-theatre seatings, and typically runs about 2.5 hours. Journey runs Tuesday through Saturday at $325 per person and typically takes 3.5 hours. Both menus are composed around Bay Area producers.
Birdsong's wine list earned a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2024. The program favors producers rooted in tradition and classically styled wines, and the reserve pairing pours iconic vineyards and library bottles. Guests who skip alcohol can choose a botanicals pairing of kombuchas, tonics, infusions and dealcoholized wines.
